Gonpachi (Tokyo)

I’d been to this restaurant made famous by the movie Kill Bill, several years before (sans kids!). We went to this restaurant 3 times during this most recent trip (with kids); the first time because our friends whose wedding we had travelled to Tokyo for, organised a pre-wedding dinner here (and went to extreme lengths to ensure the food served to my kids was allergy-safe!), the second time because we needed a food option close to where we were staying and it was easy knowing they had served food to my children safely just days before, and the third time because it was close to the medical clinic that we found ourselves at (nothing serious, but since the kids loved Gonpachi and it was across the road from the clinic, it again was the easiest option!).

We mostly had the chicken thigh skewers, chicken skin skewers, plain rice. They prepared steamed vegetables at our friends’ pre-wedding dinner because at the time of booking, one of my little ones was allergic to egg and wheat and couldn’t have the tempura, but he outgrew these allergies just before our trip to Japan, which made it much easier with soy sauce etc (which contain wheat/gluten).

They were incredible with managing the allergies, being particularly careful about any cross-contamination. My little one could have the salmon but is allergic to white fish, and they prepared salmon sashimi for him at the pre-wedding dinner, however the other times we visited, we just stuck to the chicken skewers and tempura as these were quick and easy and a hit with my little ones.

They have quite a few English-speaking staff, but best to also bring an allergy card just in case.
